Before you learn more about ZenHenna, let’s make sure you have the basics:
What is Zentangle?
“The Zentangle Method is an easy to learn, fun and relaxing way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns.”
Zentangles are miniature pieces of unplanned, abstract, black and white art created through a very specific method from an ensemble of simple, structured patterns called tangles on a 3.5-inch (89 mm) square paper tile. Zentangles are not only exquisitely beautiful, they are fun and relaxing to create.
The process of creating a Zentangle is a form of “artistic meditation” as one becomes completely engrossed in making each pattern, deliberately focusing on “one stroke at a time”®. The creativity options and pattern combinations are boundless.
The Zentangle method “increases focus and creativity, provides artistic satisfaction along with an increased sense of personal well being. The Zentangle method is enjoyed all over this world across a wide range of skills, interests and ages.”

What is henna?
Henna is a thousands of years-long storied tradition of applying crushed henna leaves made into a paste (along with some other key safe and natural ingredients including essential oils) to the skin to stain the skin with elaborate patterns and designs. Women from vastly different cultures from Africa, India, the Middle East (even Yemenite Jews) have infused this art with symbolism and stories to celebrate weddings, babies’ impending births, and more. Evidence of henna use as a cosmetic has even been found on hair and nails of ancient Egyptian mummies. Henna stains are not permanent–a henna tattoo will last from 2-4 weeks with a good stain–making them a fun way to create temporary body art for celebration or just for fun.
Now, on to ZenHenna:
ZenHenna is the creative brainchild of Cari Sultanik, a digital marketing director for a large software company by day, and a mother, wife, dog and cat-lover, reader and artist by night. ZenHenna is the fusion of Zentangle-inspired artwork and designs along with ancient and modern interpretations of henna designs and symbols. In formats ranging from paper to skin, ZenHenna art seeks to adorn the world with elegant, simple, and sometimes sacred designs.
