Umbly yours, from NYC

imageThis week I took a one-day hiatus from the whirl and twirl of corporate life for a day-trip to NYC. Since I live relatively close (north of Philadelphia) and my big sister lives there, I have been to NY a zillion times. But, I haven’t done the “tourist” thing since I was a kid. Since this was unplanned, I couldn’t get tickets for the Statue of Liberty (nothing until AUGUST!) or even the 9/11 Memorial, so I figured I’d save that for the fall and take Thing 1 and Thing 2 who should really get to visit those sites before they graduate high school (I’m quickly running out of time). Instead, I want to the Empire State Building and learned about the history of it (can you believe that was built in only 11 months?) and caught the views from the 86th floor. I didn’t pay the extra $20 to go to the 102nd floor since it was cloudy and visibility was low. Still…the view. The picture doesn’t show it, but I could at least see the outline of Lady Liberty off in the distance. The sheer scale of this city is mind-boggling.

Dodging raindrops in the city, we ducked into the NY Public Library. What an unexpected treat. The architecture and art are astounding (and I was just a tad bit freaked out remembering the Day After Tomorrow movie scenes set there). Of course, I see patterns everywhere and thought this metal border around the library’s front door could make an excellent, if not almost impossible, tangle. NY Public Library

We also went to the bar at the top of 30 Rock–SixtyFive–and seriously enjoyed wine and appetizers with this AMAZING view and SUNSET!

On the way back to Penn Station (where our train home was cancelled, leaving us stranded until much later than I intended to be out on a work night), we took in a panoramic shot of Times Square.

Times Square, as crowded late on a Tuesday evening as it is on a Monday morning, Saturday night…

The best part (OK, maybe not the BEST part)? I blew my step goal out of the water for the day (though I ate VERY not clean).

AND on to the challenge of the week: COLOURS of the rainbow (yes, written in UK spelling as the challenge is legitimately named this). I avoid color, most of the time, because I generally prefer black and white in art (photography, too). But I do like to dabble in it and this challenge was the perfect opportunity. I also wanted to try the new tangle from Maria Thomas called Umble. Sprinkled in some Printemps as a nod to spring (and soon to be a wave goodbye) and here you have it:

This one I’m particularly excited to see others’ contributions. I struggle with color, in all honesty, so I definitely can learn something from all the other talented tanglers out there!

And a quick teaser: I had the phenomenal opportunity to write a guest post for Laura Harms (I am the Diva) for her summer vacation. Look for that coming out in late July!

I encourage and appreciate sharing!:

Sounds like you had a fabulous day in New York City, notwithstanding the train snafu. What did you use for your color? Did you add the white bits after the fact? Even if you’re not that fond of color, you did a very credible job with it. I’m looking forward to seeing what you come up with as your challenge when you are the guest Zentangle Diva. PS: What do you use to record your steps?

I used Gelly Roll pens and then added the white parts after it dried. Definitely enhanced it! I use an Up band and app to record steps. My big sister gave it to me for Mother’s Day!

What a colourful take on Umble 🙂 I need to try Umble out sometime too. I love how yours are contrasted with Printemps!

The white GR pen idea was fabulous <3 Brilliant stuff ^^

You know, I would never had guessed we had this preference for black and white tangles in common. I should've known though – from seeing your work at seminar and all. I too often neglect to even think of tangling in colour, so black and white is my default train of thought when tangling.

I often shy away from colour, but I am beginning to see myself include it in some of my work. Just a little at a time 🙂

And by the way, I love your photographs of your day-trip 🙂 It looks like you had a great time!

P.S. Can't wait for your upcoming challenge on the Diva's blog <3

Thank you for your comment on my blog. I like very much your drawing because it has a lot of depth. It demonstrates besides how a quite simple drawing can be very beautiful. I confess that I prefer to draw in black and white because I master badly the color!

I am the same! Color intimidates me but this one was fun!
