Hasty Pudding, Unexpected Inspiration, and White on Black

The Red HouseGreetings from Boston (actually, Cambridge) again where I am traveling for work (my day job, of course). Last night we went to Harvard Square for dinner at this cute little place called The Red House. I was delighted when I saw their menus, payment folders, and other “assets,” and even more enchanted when I learned that one of the owners makes these right down to hand-making the papers. I could have spent all night checking them out, but I was with work colleagues and, well, I already looked kooky enough taking the pix I did!

Check these out:

Also, as we approached the restaurant, I noticed this. I have no idea what “Hasty Pudding Institute of 1770” might be, but I definitely intend to find out. How could I not?

13KIf you are following my Whole30 challenge and journey to get healthier, I posted an update on day 30 (!) here. I feel great, I can’t wait to weigh in, and I’m working on moving more now (over 6 miles yesterday!).

Now, on to this week’s challenge from the Diva herself: White on black. I’ve mentioned before how big a challenge this is for me…the pens are harder to use and require quite a bit of finesse, the paper isn’t quite as nice…but the outcome can be quite beautiful.

This is my first stab at this week’s challenge. I’m not home, so I rushed a little, and I don’t love the outcome but it’s ok. Tangles include tipple, circfleur, and arukas. I may take another crack at this later in the week.

Actually, I love that you posted your tile next to the image of the sign on the building. It really looks like your tile was inspired by that image of the oval sign and the lines of the siding. How cool is that? Your design is strong and has a lot of movement and energy. I love it!

Antonine! I don’t know that it was, but maybe subliminally!!!

As a travel blogger, I can totally relate to feeling a little sheepish about taking photos of everything–all the time—-especially food. I went out to dinner with a group of travel bloggers last week. We must have looked ridiculous. As soon as the food arrived, everyone whipped out their cell phones or cameras.I definitely also would have taken photos of the restaurant owner’s creative work. Quite amazing. I also struggle with finding a good technique for the white on black tiles. Judging from other blog posts I’ve read in response to this week’s challenge, we are certainly not alone in that regard.

That’s good to hear! I usually don’t hesitate to embrace my kookiness but with work people… I am looking forward to seeing everyone’s white on black tiles. Those pens are so feisty and it’s hard to vary width.

Nice Cari! Yep, whether intentional or not your tile really mimics the photo! Wonder if it was a subliminal brain thing! Cool tile, any way it came about!

I loved reading your post, so well written and informative. And I’m afraid that I agree…your tile really looks as though it were inspired by the photo, but regardless of how it came about, you did an excellent white on black tile. It looks as though it worked well for you. Nice work!
