Challenge 213

Challenge: Traced Object Strings (Meet Pinchy!)

Hello from Providence, RI! On the heels of a whirlwind of a week at CZT #18, I am way ahead of (my) schedule participating in this week’s I Am the Diva challenge #213–Traced Object Strings, though way behind some of my new fellow CZTs (*Ahem, I’m talking about YOU Suzanne Fleur ;)*) who jump in more quickly. I have so much more to write about my experience here in Providence, but, frankly, I’m exhausted from this ride and a little under the weather…so that will have to wait.

On to the challenge. This week’s challenge is “Traced Object Strings.” The idea is that you trace an object and tangle within that as your string. In the spirit of this week’s Certified Zentangle Teacher seminar #18 at the Hotel Providence, I thought I’d build a lasting reminder of Pinchy, the earth-friendly pet lobster who encourages the hotel’s guests to conserve water and energy by declining to have your linens and towels refreshed. Cute!*

Tangles used include Printemps, Pokeroot, Aquafleur and one I just learned at CZT #18–Marasu. Oh how I love that white shading on the coil and how it pops off of the paper. I also chose to add color to this one to bring Pinchy to life with his real-life colors. I thought for a moment about adding his spots and eyes, but as Zentangle is meant to be non-representational, that felt like one step too far.

*Full disclosure: I did place Pinchy on my bed. I love the earth and I believe in conservation, but it is so incredibly rare for anyone to refresh my linens and towels in my real life. I live with three men–one adult and two teenagers–plus a French bulldog, a diva cat and two boy cats, a bearded dragon named Leonardo, and a betta fish. I think I’m safe to admit that just this week, I am taking  a rare opportunity to let things happen for me without my direct involvement with things like washing, folding, running steps, herding cats, wrangling teenagers, and cleaning up dog poop. Don’t  judge me.

I encourage and appreciate sharing!:

Pinchy and the story behind him are adorable, but even nicer is the tile you created using him/her (?) as your string. I think you did an excellent job with all of the tangles you used and yes, I love how the white shading makes it pop too. Congratulations also on becoming a new CZT!

Thank you so much! I left him along with a tip for the lovely cleaning woman who smiled all the time at the Hotel Providence!

Loving your special string and story surrounding it…congrats on your new CZT status. Did you learn lots? You’ll have to tell more next time and let us know if you recommend it to the rest of us.
